How do I become the kind of person who lives life well?
Human life is a journey through a changing landscape of opportunities, relationships, responsibilities, challenges, and conditions. No person can fully control the terrain they will encounter, yet each person can develop the wisdom, character, capacities, and practices that enable them to navigate that terrain well.
The purpose of The Landscape of Living is to provide a coherent framework for understanding the realities that shape human life, the processes through which people grow, and the ways they participate wisely and faithfully throughout that journey. It is not a prescription for a particular path nor a guarantee of specific outcomes. Rather, it is a map for understanding reality more clearly, navigating life more wisely, participating more fully, and cultivating the capacities through which flourishing becomes possible across the changing landscapes of human experience. Human flourishing emerges as a person learns to understand reality, engage it wisely, and is transformed through that engagement over the course of life’s journey.
A Landscape of Living Metaphor
The Landscape of Living is organized around the metaphor of a journey through a living landscape. Like every metaphor, it is not intended to describe reality literally but to illuminate it by drawing attention to patterns, relationships, and experiences that are often easier to understand through familiar imagery.
In this metaphor, human life is understood as a lifelong journey through a landscape that no individual creates but every individual inhabits. The landscape represents the reality in which life unfolds. The traveler represents the person living within that reality. The journey represents the ongoing process through which life is experienced, choices are made, character is formed, and one’s contribution gradually emerges.
Within this metaphor, the major elements of the framework correspond to different aspects of the journey:
| Framework | Within The Landscape of Living Metaphor |
| The Foundations of the Landscape | The landscape itself—the reality, purpose, and governing principles within which every journey takes place. |
| The Traveler: Recognizing Self | The traveler coming to understand who they are, how they are uniquely equipped, and how they engage the journey. |
| The Process of Becoming | The lifelong journey of growth, development, and transformation. |
| Character | The kind of traveler one is becoming through repeated choices and lived experience. |
| The Practice of Living | Learning to navigate the landscape wisely through sound judgment, faithful stewardship, and intentional action. |
| The Fields of Life | The various regions and domains through which every traveler moves, including relationships, work, family, community, health, and other areas of human experience. |
| The Climate of Life | The changing seasons, conditions, opportunities, constraints, and circumstances encountered along the way. |
| The Fruits of Living | The enduring influence, transformation, and legacy left upon the landscape through the traveler’s presence and participation. |
Flourishing is not found in the traveler alone, nor in the landscape alone, but in the relationship between them. As travelers come to understand reality more clearly, develop the character and capacities needed to engage it well, and faithfully steward the opportunities entrusted to them, they themselves are transformed. At the same time, their presence leaves enduring marks upon the landscape through the people they influence, the communities they strengthen, and the contributions they make. A life well lived therefore shapes both the traveler and the world through which the traveler passes.

See reality clearly. Know yourself honestly. Become wisely. Live intentionally. Cultivate what has been entrusted to you. Leave the world better than you found it.
