About The Landscape of Living

Understanding Life as a Landscape

The Landscape of Living is an ongoing effort to develop a coherent framework for understanding human life, growth, and flourishing.

Life presents each person with opportunities, relationships, responsibilities, joys, losses, questions, and challenges. Although no one can fully control the terrain they encounter, each person can grow in the wisdom, character, and capacities needed to navigate that terrain well.

The Landscape of Living approaches life through the metaphor of a journey across an ever-changing landscape. Rather than offering a prescribed path or a formula for success, it provides a conceptual map for understanding the realities of human life and navigating them with increasing wisdom, character, and purpose.

Why This Project Exists

Many disciplines offer valuable insights into particular aspects of human life. Psychology explores personality and development. Philosophy examines meaning and ethics. Theology considers purpose and ultimate reality. Leadership, education, organizational science, and the social sciences each contribute important perspectives.

Yet these bodies of knowledge often remain disconnected. They answer individual questions well but rarely illuminate how those answers relate to one another.

The Landscape of Living was created to provide an integrative framework that helps place these perspectives within a larger whole. Rather than replacing existing disciplines, it seeks to illuminate the relationships among them, showing how enduring realities, personal development, character, daily practice, relationships, circumstances, and long-term impact participate in a coherent understanding of human life.

The Framework

The Landscape is organized around eight interconnected domains that together describe the human journey.

  • The Foundations of the Landscape explores the nature of reality, human purpose, and the principles that govern life.
  • The Traveler: Recognizing Self examines the nature of the traveler, including enduring characteristics, identity, values, motivations, and self-understanding.
  • The Process of Becoming explores how people grow, mature, develop meaningful relationships, construct meaning, and move toward greater integration.
  • Character considers the enduring qualities that shape how a person encounters the world.
  • The Practice of Living focuses on the habits, judgments, rhythms, and practices through which people navigate life wisely.
  • The Fields of Life examines the major domains in which life is lived, including personal wellbeing, relationships, contribution, and quality of life.
  • The Climate of Life considers the changing seasons, roles, contexts, and conditions that influence every journey.
  • The Fruits of Living explores the effects that emerge through a person’s life, including influence, transformation, generativity, and legacy.

Together these domains form an integrated framework rather than a sequence of steps. Each informs the others, and understanding deepens as the relationships among them become clearer.

A Living Body of Work

The Landscape of Living is intended to remain a living and growing body of knowledge.

The framework provides the enduring structure, while the essays, references, diagrams, and other resources throughout this website continue to expand and deepen individual topics. As understanding grows, the framework itself may continue to mature through continued study, reflection, dialogue, and experience.

The aim is not to answer every question, but to continue refining a coherent framework through which questions can be explored with greater clarity, depth, and perspective.

How the Framework Emerged

The Landscape of Living did not begin as a writing project or a website. It emerged gradually over many years through a persistent desire to understand how the many dimensions of human life relate to one another.

Throughout my personal and professional life, I found myself returning to the same questions. Why do some people flourish while others struggle under similar circumstances? How do character, purpose, relationships, habits, beliefs, and circumstances interact over the course of a lifetime? Why do so many disciplines offer valuable insights while still leaving the larger picture incomplete? Ultimately, how do I “flourish” and live life in such a way as to become the best person I can be and truly enjoy the experience along the way?

Those questions led me to study widely across psychology, philosophy, theology, organizational leadership, virtue ethics, systems thinking, and the human sciences. Over time, patterns began to emerge. Ideas that had once seemed unrelated revealed deeper connections, and concepts from different traditions proved to be complementary rather than competing.

Over time, the work shifted from collecting ideas to recognizing the relationships among them. What emerged was not simply a body of knowledge, but a conceptual landscape capable of organizing many dimensions of human life into a coherent whole.

About the Author

I have spent more than three decades working at the intersection of leadership, organizational development, and human behavior. Throughout that time, my professional work has been complemented by a lifelong habit of studying, asking questions, and seeking understanding across disciplines.

Although my career has centered on organizations and leadership, my deeper interest has always been the broader question of what it means to live well. That curiosity has shaped not only my professional development but also my personal life, leading me to explore philosophy, theology, psychology, virtue ethics, systems thinking, and other fields that seek to understand the human experience.

The Landscape of Living is one expression of that continuing pursuit. I hope it encourages thoughtful exploration, deeper understanding, and meaningful conversation for those who share a similar desire to understand life more fully

A Note on the Use of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has been used throughout the development of this project as a collaborative writing, editing, research, and production tool where it could improve clarity, organization, efficiency, or expression. The concepts, framework, structure, synthesis, and intellectual direction of The Landscape of Living are my own. AI has served as an assistant in communicating these ideas, not as their originator.

The Scope of This Project

The Landscape of Living is intended to provide a conceptual framework for understanding human life, growth, character, relationships, and flourishing. It is designed to encourage thoughtful reflection and informed decision-making rather than to replace professional expertise.

While many of the ideas presented here may be relevant to questions involving health, relationships, work, finances, or other important areas of life, this website is not a substitute for qualified medical, mental health, legal, financial, or other professional advice. When circumstances require specialized knowledge or care, I encourage readers to seek guidance from appropriately qualified professionals.

The purpose of this framework is to provide perspective rather than prescription, helping readers think more clearly about the realities within which important decisions are made.

An Invitation

However you choose to explore The Landscape of Living, I hope you discover ideas that deepen your understanding, broaden your perspective, and encourage thoughtful reflection. My invitation is simply to begin exploring. Every journey starts somewhere, and every landscape reveals itself one step at a time.
