How do I grow into the person I am capable of becoming?
Becoming does not occur in a vacuum. Every person enters the developmental process with a unique structure consisting of cognitive capacities, personality traits, temperamental tendencies, aptitudes, dispositions, values, motivations, and identity commitments. These realities shape how development unfolds without fully determining it. The Process of Becoming assumes this structure and works within it, but its primary concern is not describing the terrain. Its concern is understanding how growth, integration, and transformation occur within that terrain. It explores how human beings grow, change, and move toward greater wholeness throughout life. It examines the developmental processes through which people mature, form identity, create meaning, navigate relationships, develop character, and integrate the many dimensions of their experience.
While Recognizing Self focuses on understanding the enduring realities that shape a person, The Process of Becoming focuses on how those realities evolve, interact, and develop over time. Human beings are not static. Life continually presents opportunities for growth, adaptation, refinement, healing, and transformation.
Within The Landscape of Living, becoming is understood as more than self-improvement or the acquisition of skills and knowledge. It involves the ongoing integration of thought, emotion, relationship, experience, purpose, and character into an increasingly coherent and mature way of being. Development unfolds through participation in life itself—through relationships, challenges, responsibilities, successes, failures, and the search for meaning.
The Process of Becoming serves as the developmental bridge between Recognizing Self and Character. As growth and integration unfold, character qualities emerge and become visible within the various Fields of Life.
